A Window to Their World: Watch, Wonder, and Learn
What began as a window upgrade has become one of the most beloved views at the MK Nature Center. Thanks to community support, new energy-efficient windows and a sweeping mural were added to the auditorium wall in 2022—transforming it into a quiet haven for bird observation and reflection.
Looking out over a lively gathering space of feeders, brush, and a winding creek, the windows offer a rare front-row seat to the daily lives of native birds. Here, visitors can witness flashes of color, listen to soft chirps and calls, and observe feeding habits, nesting behaviors, and social dynamics—all from just beyond the glass.
To protect the birds that inspire us, the new windows include Feather Friendly markers—subtle yet effective dots that dramatically reduce bird-window collisions. Information on how to use these bird-safe strategies at home is available on site, empowering visitors to help protect birds in their own neighborhoods.
Alongside the windows, a hand-painted mural by local artist Rick Friesen invites visitors to slow down and take note—literally. The mural encourages field journaling, sparking curiosity and deeper observation through writing and sketching. It’s a gentle reminder that the more we look, the more we truly see.
Observe. Record. Connect.
